Max Waterer is a multidisciplinary artist born in Liverpool, UK, and currently based in Amsterdam.
Waterer’s creative process is deeply intuitive, allowing his work to delve into the realms of the unconscious while exploring themes of ambiguity and presence through a unique blend of geometric abstraction and expressionism.
Fusing painting with poetry, Waterer’s narrative-driven compositions reflect a range of subjects, including seasonal changes, mechanisms, sound, rhythm, and cyclical harmony.
His work is often marked by a tension between structure and fluidity, with his geometric abstractions grounding the viewer in a sense of order, while his expressive, gestural strokes break through that order to evoke raw emotion and spontaneity. This interplay between control and release is central to Waterer’s creative process, allowing for a dynamic expression of complex psychological states and metaphysical questions.
His diverse choice of materials is guided by his conceptual intentions and the specific objectives he sets for each piece, resulting in a rich and varied body of work that invites contemplation and engagement. Waterer integrates poetry and text into his practice, weaving narrative elements into his visual compositions. This fusion of mediums allows him to explore the intersection between language and image, reinforcing the thematic concerns of his work while inviting the viewer to engage with multiple layers of meaning.
Waterer’s choice of materials is equally varied, ranging from traditional oils, acrylics and ink to more unconventional substances, such as found objects and fabric. This diversity reflects his commitment to creating works that are as tactile as they are conceptual, engaging the viewer not only visually but physically.
Whether through the use of textured surfaces that invite touch or the incorporation of sound and rhythm in his installations, Waterer’s art encourages a deeper, multisensory experience, offering a space for reflection on the fleeting yet cyclical nature of existence.
